Case Study – Bernd Dahringer “Hunter” Strat Style Solid Bodied Guitar – Hardware Upgrade
As with many older instruments especially those that have seen a great deal of use, eventually essential elements start to decay, break or simply wear away. This was the case with Bernd’s Hunter solid body guitar. Many years of use had left the bridge and machine heads/tuners worn out and the wiring had begun to perish. We were asked to restore its playability, make the wiring safer and reliable and improve the tuning.
As the original tuners were non standard we had to develop a way of making the holes smaller and we did that by hand making some custom sleeves to reduce the width of the holes (please see gallery below). This allowed us to fit new more reliable tuners. To further improve the intonation and playability we replaced the old bridge With the need for improved sonics we took the opportunity to add a second potentiometer cavity and redesigned the wiring to take advantage of the options and then rewired. We topped of this assignment by re-dressing the frets, a new set of strings and set up for action, playability and intonation.
This has resulting in an instrument that has improved performance for its owner and greater versatility and many, many more years of amazing use, all without loosing the original look and feel of the guitar.
